Prevent sea water pollution by ships - Ships have ≥ 400 tons GRT and equipped with appropriate preventive equipment due to oil pollution of sea water. The placement of this equipment is also divided into categories according to the type of vessel. This is to prevent oil spills that sea water is not contaminated by the ship, which has the engine room and loading space. This type of vessel could be said types of tankers.

The equipment installed to prevent sea water pollution by ships is the oily water separator, oil filtering units, monitoring, and control systems, sludge tanks, piping and discharging all of which shall be in accordance with the terms.

Here's an explanation about the equipment in terms of preventing the water from the ocean by ship.

1. Oily water separator

This tool is a tool that contains oil-water separator. In accordance with the requirements of GRT on ships ≥ 400 tons have oily water separator installed equipment. Oily separator can separate oil and water, which water has a maximum oil content of 15 ppm. Oily water separator is in the put in the engine room on any ship with the installation of pipes that useful to suck from bilga engine room and out the exhaust pipe into the vessel or tank sludge. Oily water separator is coupled with the pump unit and the separator husband who works with a system centrifulgar and filter system that has a density of ≤ 15 ppm.

Another type of tool is a filter system. In terms of placement is also the same water filters, placed in the engine room that has a filter circuit levels which generally consists of three filter units. The way these tools work is water that contains a series of oil through the filter first and then throw oil overboard about ≤ 15 ppm. If you want to make sure only the oil contains less than 15 ppm ≤ is having to always change the filter regularly.

In terms of installation faucet can be used to check the water before being discharged into the sea.

2. Oil discharge monitoring and control system

If a ship fitted with a filtering oily water separator 100 ppm, then it must be equipped with additional equipment such as oil discharge monitoring and control system. Oil discharge monitoring and control system can know the content of the oil in a measuring tool called the oil content meter. Measuring tool that works if the oil content exceeds 15 ppm, then the gauges would sound as a warning.

Oil discharge monitoring systems work and control system gives a warning if water containing oil exceeds 15 ppm. So water should be filtered again to achieve ≤ 15 ppm. This tool is equipped with valve cover for disposal into the sea automatically. This valve serves to receive the sensor and closes automatically if the oil has reached 15 ppm more.
Oil discharge monitoring and control system is equipped with oil content meter. Registrar oil content can be graphically shows the oil level before disposal. Disposal will be stopped if the record exceeds 15 ppm.

3. Disposal of oil residues

This relates to the disposal of the remains of the oil. To ships must be provided the disposal of oil remnants. However, it must be adjusted by the amount of residual oil produced each day.

a. Incenator: Thrown a dirty burn residual oil produced by oily water separator.

b. Boilers: function to burn residual oil.

c. Special tanks: function mix remaining oil with other fuels to accommodate the dirty oil to be disposed of ashore.

d. Tank I: accommodates functioning dirty oil or commonly called sludge tanks.

e. Tank II: serves as a discharge pipe is specifically associated with specific disposal flange with the international standard size.

4. Segregation the between FO and water ballast systems

In this case make sure the installation must be properly separated from the fuel pipe installation with the installation of water back so it does not make the system insulating flange like dead.

5. Oil record book

This is related to the oil record book. To be more focused then every ship must have a user guide and the oil record book. Oil record book should be filled if there is a fuel-filling activity, bilga water discharge from the engine room, the transfer of oil between tanks.

6. Oil discharge monitoring from oil tankers cargo space

This tool is necessary in order to monitor the oil content does not exceed 15 ppm. This tool is equipped with a pump discharge to the system start and stop automatically. Also, it can monitor and record the computer unit of all activities of the disposal fluid from the chamber and unloading tankers. In the tank can be mounted detection devices to determine the amount of fluid in the room and unloading.

That is what is needed to prevent sea water pollution by ships.
